Ipanema, Sexy Beach

Ipanema is one of the most known of Rio de Janeiro´s neighborhoods and beaches. Bordered by the Leblon beach and Arpoador Beach, Ipanema beach is considered one of the most important and centers of activities in Rio.

Along with Copacabana, Ipanema is one of the iconic places of Rio de Janeiro, not only for its beach, but also for the neighborhood, one of the most expensive places to live in Rio, but also an important touristic destination, with many restaurants and hotels.

This part of Rio became internationally famous thanks to the bossa nova jazz song ¨The Girl from Ipanema¨.

How to get to Ipanema from the airport

Rio de Janeiro has two airports,  the most important one and the one for international flights is the Galeao International airport(20km from downtown), the other one, for domestic flights is the Santos Dumont airport, to get to the beach areas of Rio from the airport you have four main alternatives, bus, metered taxis, pre-paid taxis, and private cars, also some hotels have their own transfer.

Bus

The service is operated by Air-conditioned buses, they depart every 20-30 mins from 05.30 in the morning to 22:00 and run between both airports, the main bus terminal, and further along the beachfront in the following neighborhoods: Flamengo, Botafogo, Copacabana Ipanema, and Leblon.  The cost of the ticket is R$ 6.50.

Where to Stay

This is not an issue in Ipanema, as it is a very tourist area you can find different types of hotels and accommodations, from 5-star hotels to hostels. The most known hotels in the area are the Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Ipanema, the Golden Tulip Ipanema Plaza, and the Fasano, all 5-star hotels, but it is plenty of hotels in the area and all very close to the beach.

The Beach

The word Ipanema means Bad or Dangerous Waters in the Tupi language, the indigenous that lived originally in the area, and this is a good description for the oversized waves that Ipanema beach has, you have to be very careful if you want to take a swim, but the beach is beautiful, the white sand, and the views are spectacular.
Plenty of activities are held everywhere, people playing football, volley, people enjoying the beach with a beer or coconut water, everybody enjoying this traditional and fantastic area of Rio.
