The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), India

In the northern Indian city of Amritsar, near the border with Pakistan, lies the Golden Temple.  Also known as Harmandir Sahib, it's the holiest place for Sikhs, the religion that originated in India. Sikhs believe a visit here is essential, and they aim to make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime to pray and worship.

The story of the Golden Temple goes back to 1574. Back then, the place where it stands now was surrounded by a small lake and nestled in a thin forest. Construction started that year and was finished by 1604. However, the temple faced trouble in the mid-1700s. A general named Jahan Khan, leading Afghan forces under Ahmed Shah Abdali, attacked the temple. Sikhs bravely rebuilt it in the 1760s.

Don't miss the Golden Temple if you're ever in India! It's easily one of the most stunning places to see in the whole country.
