The amazing art in Japanese manhole covers

A couple of years ago, I had the enormous pleasure of visiting Japan, Tokyo to be more precise.
And while walking in the streets, something caught my eye, the drainage covers or manhole covers had different artistic figures and drawings, some of them were painted and had beautiful designs.
Later I discovered that it is very common in all of Japan this kind of art using drainage covers.

I don´t know the exact reason why this art in manhole covers started and developed in all of Japan, but it truly is something that Japan stands out.

Apparently, a Japan Society of Manhole Covers also exist, this society claims that there are more than 6000 manhole covers with artistic designs all through Japan.
Japanese manhole covers come in a variety of different designs depending on locality, utility type, and the manufacturer of the manhole cover.

Japanese manhole covers often include a symbol specific to an area or town as part of their design.

Trees are the most common design, followed by landscapes and flowers.
The Japanese are so proud of the artistic manhole covers that they even held a Japanese Manhole Covers Festival in 2019.
One more reason for loving this incredible country. Japan will surprise you in every way possible.
