| Snow-covered landscapes in Japan's Tohoku region capture the spirit of slow rail travel that Luna Azul aims to revive when it enters service in 2027. |
"Rediscovering the romance of slow travel through the heart of the Japanese countryside."
There is an undeniable magic to falling asleep to the rhythmic click-clack of a train in Tokyo and waking up to the mist-shrouded, snowy mountains of northern Japan. For decades, the romance of the rails was defined by Japan’s legendary Blue Trains—nocturnal cruisers that crisscrossed the country, carrying dreamers, explorers, and slow-travel enthusiasts through the night.
While the bullet train revolutionized speed, it also took something away: the beauty of the journey itself. But true travel romance never really dies. East Japan Railway Company (JR East) announced a spectacular revival of the overnight rail tradition. Scheduled to begin service in early fiscal 2027, the Luna Azul (Spanish for Blue Moon) is set to bring slow, high-quality, deeply comforting train travel back to the heart of Japan.
A Journey That Changes with the Seasons
The philosophy behind the Luna Azul is simple: to transform travel from a race against time into an immersive experience. To do this, the train adapts its route to mirror the changing Japanese seasons, offering two completely distinct itineraries.
Spring to Autumn: The Overnight Cruising Route
During the warmer months, the Luna Azul runs as a classic overnight service twice a week, connecting the neon-lit hub of Tokyo (Shinagawa Station) with Aomori, the ruggedly beautiful northernmost end of Honshu.
Winding through the scenic Joetsu and Uetsu Main lines, this route offers a rare window into the scenic landscapes of the Tohoku region. You can board the northbound train in Tokyo around 9:00 PM, watch the city lights give way to the countryside over a drink, and wake up to the crisp northern air of Aomori by 9:30 AM the next morning.
Winter: The Daytime Onsen Getaway
When heavy snow blankets the north, the Luna Azul transforms into a cozy, 7-car daytime cruiser operating six round trips per week. Instead of heading to Aomori, it journeys from Tokyo to Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi—the gateway to Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan’s most famous hot spring alpine resorts. It becomes an ideal winter getaway, where the transition from city to snow becomes part of the relaxation.

| The modern E657 series will be completely transformed into the deep-blue Luna Azul fleet. |
The Onboard Experience: Cocooned in Luxury
Far from the cramped bunk beds of traditional sleeper trains and public corridors, think again. The Luna Azul is a masterclass in modern Japanese design. JR East is completely redesigning a fleet of E657 series EMUs, swapping standard seating for exclusive, private compartments that limit overnight passenger capacity to approximately 120–125 passengers. This ensures an intimate, quiet, and premium atmosphere.
Travelers can choose between Green Car and Premium Green Car classes, offering five sophisticated room layouts tailored for solo adventurers, couples, and families:
- Luna Premium & Premium Wide: Luxury spaces featuring floor-to-ceiling wooden interiors, generous dedicated luggage storage, and plush L-shaped sofas that fold flat into beds at night.
- Luna Comfort & Comfort Wide: Intimate, highly functional private cabins designed with clean lines and maximum comfort (including fully wheelchair-accessible options).
- Luna Comfort Grande: The crown jewel of group travel, this massive suite is designed specifically to accommodate up to four passengers in complete privacy.
The Social Heart: The Luna Vista Lounge
Beyond the private cabins lies Car 5: the Luna Vista Lounge. Outfitted with expansive, sweeping panoramic windows on both sides, this shared space invites travelers to gather, chat with fellow explorers, enjoy regional specialties, and watch the Japanese countryside glide past under the moonlight.
Planning Your Journey
While final fares are still being finalized, JR East intends to position ticket prices around the cost of a standard Tohoku Shinkansen Green Car ticket (which usually sits around 24,180 yen) "plus a little extra on top" for the overnight experience. To ensure exclusivity, tickets will initially be sold primarily as part of curated travel packages and holiday itineraries, making it an ideal centerpiece for a memorable journey through Japan.
"The Luna Azul isn't trying to compete with the speed of the Shinkansen; it is challenging our obsession with hurry. It invites us to slow down, look out the window with a drink in hand, and remember that the journey can be just as beautiful as the destination. For anyone who feels that modern travel has lost its romance, 2027 is calling your name."
