With 13.5 million inhabitants, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, and by population, one of the largest in Europe. It is packed with history and culture, and offers amazing attractions for both the seasoned traveller and the informal city breaker. Below you will find a mix of must-see attractions suited to most tastes!
Dolmabahce Palace
Dolmabahce Palace was the home of the Ottomon Empire’s last sultan. It is a location of great importance to native turks, due to it being the deathplace of the first president of the republic, in 1938. The clock in his bedroom still points to his time of death, at 09:05 on 10th November.
The palace is located on the European side of the city, and is known for its beauty.
Kariye Museum (The Chora Church)
This beautiful church, built in the 11th century, is known for it’s remarkable mosaics. They illustrate the life of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. Now a museum, the Chora Church is one of the most popular attractions in the city (for good reason).
Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii)
Built in the early 17th Century, this huge seven minaret mosque features some of the most beautiful architecture in the city of Istanbul. The blue mosque inherited its name after the blue tiles used in the pillars of its construction. Original with six minarets, the seventh was added with the construction of the mecca mosque. When travelling to the mosque, make sure your visit doesn’t clash with prayer hours, when it is closed!
Grand Bazaar (Kapali Carsisi)
The Grand Bazaar is the largest covered market in Turkey (it really is huge). Although the exact number has never been counted, it is thought over 4,000 shops and stalls reside here. If you want the true bazaar experience, you truly can’t beat Kapali Carsisi; you will lose hours exploring the market and haggling for goods & produce.
Istanbul Modern Museum
This popular museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions, a gallery for photography, and cinema/video exhibitions. A wide range of diverse art forms can be found here, as well as an arts library and a café and restaurant that boast beautiful views across the city. This is a great attraction for both art lovers, and general tourists. It can be tricky to find, although it is located within a stone’s throw of other great city attractions, and is well worth the trip.
Featuring hundreds of sights and attractions for tourists, Istanbul is an amazing city chock full of culture and history. This city is a fantastic destination for a romantic break, or an adventurous excursion!
