What to visit around Buenos Aires City Center in one day

After two years I went back to the city centre of Buenos Aires. I live about 20km from the city centre, but I didn´t have a reason to go to this part of the city. So in the past two years, I was just around other areas in the city of Buenos Aires.

This is the most known area for tourists, but the pandemic seems that caused a lot of harm to this part of the city. Lots of shops are still closed and you don´t see as many people as you used to.  Anyway, it continues to be as beautiful as always.

I took the subway and got down to Diagonal Norte station, one thing about the Buenos Aires Subway, or Subte as we call it here is that it is very cheap, just 30 Argentinian pesos, which would be about 0,15 US Dollars.

The first thing you see when you get out of the Subte, the Obelisco, one of the most iconic views of Buenos Aires.

Buenos Aires has these things, beautiful buildings from a glorious era.

My next stop was the Puerto Madero neighbourhood, just next to the city centre, this area is one of the newest neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires and one of the most expensive.
This area is full of restaurants, so it is ideal to be there at midday to have lunch.

Continuing to the north through Puerto Madero, you arrive at this area called Catalinas, it is a large complex of office towers occupied by various multinationals and several luxury hotels. It is located in the Retiro neighbourhood, near the centre of the city of Buenos Aires.

Cordoba Avenue is where Catalinas starts, but if you go up through the avenue and at the intersection with Florida Street, you´ll arrive at Galerias Pacifico, a shopping mall in the city centre, and the most beautiful shopping mall in Buenos Aires.

Formerly it was the historic Pacific Building, built in the 19th century in the heart of the city, work was completed around 1905.

Shortly afterwards, in 1908, part of the building was sold to the Buenos Aires Pacific Railway, which established its headquarters there. Hence its name.

Just in front of the Galerias Pacifico, another building that will take your attention is the building of Centro Naval. It was designed by the French architects Jacques Dunant and Gastón Mallet, in a lavish academic style, and was inaugurated in 1914.

A couple of blocks from Galerias Pacifico, continuing along Florida Street, is Plaza San Martin. Located in the Retiro neighbourhood, near the Retiro train station. It has many monuments and sculptures and is a very nice place to visit.

The Plaza Hotel was one of the most representative buildings of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century in Argentina. Built in the Retiro area and in front of Plaza San Martín on Florida Street.  It has been closed for years, a real shame, although it is clear that they are building behind the historic building, I don't know if it will be a Hotel again.

Buenos Aires is a huge city and a very enjoyable city, this area is probably the first area that a tourist will see when visiting Buenos Aires, and spending one day enjoying it at its maximum is a good idea. Leaving for other days in other areas like San Telmo, La Boca, Palermo, etc...

If you plan to visit Buenos Aires I really hope this can give you an idea of what to visit during your first day.
